To think globally and act locally means to think of your issue in a bigger sense than just in the neighborhood or the United States. To act locally means to resolve your issue from the place you are in meaning where you live. Trying to solve the issue of how media is influencing the self image of a male from a local site will make it harder because it is a broader issue. The media is influencing people from however they could target them to try to make a simplistic society. In a recent study that was done at the University of Chicago at Urbana-Champaign showed that there was a correlation between negative self image and negative behaviors in teens. Another problem that was stemming from negative self image is the suicidal tendencies(Teen Self Image,2009). This means that the more people with negative image of themselves are more prompted to commit suicide. the media is making a bigger impact in society rather than just trying to make one society that follows by its own norms.
This issue connects to Chicago and the larger United States by the self image being made everywhere. There is often bullying done to kids that do not fit in the same categories of “good looking people” that the media has portrayed. This can lead to bigger problems than just a male being unhappy with his body. According to Success Can Begin With Self-esteem,2009:We have fallen behind. There is no longer an Illinois Council on Youth or an Illinois Commission on Children and Youth, and the number of social services agencies for youth has dwindled. Those that still exist are often underfunded and treatment-oriented, rather than prevention-driven. Perhaps the time is ripe for the government and state legislature to form a task force that would look into self-esteem building.” This quote represents the lack of attention that people has been putting on the issue. Without the youth council centers that kids could attend to get help there is a higher risk of these suicidal tendencies.
In schools there is counselors that kids can reach out to when they need a problem, but when it comes to the issue of being unhappy with your image for some kids it can be hard. Definitely there is a lack of self esteem in teens when they just do not fit in the cliques they hang around with because they want to have the most common things they can relate to. People can become young activists of this by influencing the good vibes whenever kids fall into low self esteem. People can make others feel better by a simple compliment that could make them smile. If there was more youth organizations focusing on this issue I think there would be less of a problem.
